His Excellency (For DZD) ===================== His Excellency has left the theatre of life And the audience is left in a disarray Strange noises reverberate in their hearts As Bandit howls upon the plain Upon the plains… I’m still confused and quite dazed You were an inspiration that did amaze You left a hole in our hearts A hole in our hearts A hole in our hearts… His Excellency has left the theatre of life And the audience is in a disarray A strange noise reverberates through their hearts As Bandit howls upon the plain Upon the plains Up on the plains Up on the plains What remains? What remains? You left a hole in our hearts A hole in our hearts You left a hole in our hearts But I’m grateful I knew you from the start…

about

Sorry, I am a little confused & quite dazed…

I am at a loss.

For years I have been participating in February Album Writing Month (www.fawm.org) as well as its sister challenge 50/90. Throughout those years I have made a lot of really great friends & participated in an amazing community, probably the best community of musicians & music lovers on the internet.

However, a few days ago I received word that one of those dear friends, fellow FAWMer DZD (or dzdandcunfusd) passed away after being quite sick for most of this year. His passing has sent a shock wave through part of the FAWM community, & to tell you the truth, I'm still in shock myself. I knew DZD wasn't well. But I was hoping he was on the mend and he would be back to his normal self in time for FAWM 2023.

Unfortunately, that hope was not to be.

DZD was a very active member of the FAWM community. He was a prolific song writer, often recording far more songs then either the FAWM or 50/90 challenges called for. Many of those songs were collaborations with other FAWMers, which allowed DZD to build a network of good friends that supported each other in their creative endeavours and beyond. I was fortunate to be counted amongst them. DZD always had a knack for pushing the envelope of sonic possibility. His music is experimental, unique and driven by a curiosity to discover new sounds & to paint new sonic vistas. His influence on my own playing and song writing is perhaps immeasurable.

DZD & I sort of had this "unofficial competition" between us. We always tried to see who would post more songs by the end of either FAWM or 50/90. Some years I would be on top. Other years, he would best me. Win or lose, our friendly competition pushed us both to remain creative.

That was something I missed this past summer, during 50/90. DZD was only able to post a few songs before he got sick. His absence from the community & from the challenge worried many of his FAWMer friends. We desperately tried to contact him. But his sickness kept him from being able to reply. Every once & a while, one of us would receive a message from him, giving us an update. But these messages only fueled our worry. That worry translated, for me, into barely reaching the goal of writing 50 songs in the 90 days between July 4th & October 1st. It was the poorest result I had achieved in all the years of doing the 50/90 challenge. And it was even a struggle for me to achieve that. For that reason, I am a little aprehensive as to how FAWM & 50/90 will be in the future…

DZD, my friend. You have inspired me. You have pushed me to be more creative & more innovative in my techniques & sound design. I have enjoyed & learned from every conversation we had. I was blessed to have been able to collaborate with you on many occations. You have left a hole in my heart. But I am grateful I knew you from the start. I am grateful for all of the time & music we shared. I am grateful for the memories I have. Thank you.

Rest in peace, buddy.

See You In The Shadows…
