A few years ago, I had a concept album sort of come together all by itself during February Album Writting Month (FAWM). That album was Catharsis (
candle.bandcamp.com/album/catharsis). It was the first time in a long time that my Muse was forcing me to confront my past & those dark years of my youth. I think Catharsis was the beginning of this healing journey, and now this current project is a continuation of that path. This song takes its name/theme from a line in Catharsis' opening track/lead single Before The Rain. The Broken Sidewalk is a powerful image in my memory, its symbolism runs deep within my psyche. It is one of the images from my past that I must come to terms with in order for me to begin to move forward again.
When I perform Before The Rain now, I usually end it with a new coda that goes: "I'm beginning to understand what happened on that dark, lonely night" This song is part of that process of beginning to understand…
What people are saying about The Broken Sidewalk:
"I love those drums, they are epic! And the guitar works really well there too. I really enjoy those moments when the higher pitched swirls come to the forefront."
- heuristicsinc, FAWM
"I absolutely love the goth rock sound of this and agree with the other comments about the drums. This definitely creates for me the sense of embarking on a path leading somewhere dark and deep."
- Daniel Jun Kim (a.k.a. The Popmythologist), FAWM
"Start out sounding like a rockabilly banger, then goes into some sci-fi theme, then to a western, man this track has it all! The hook in here is really catchy too, love the variations in it and it's just the right amount of letting us have it and making us wait for it."
- looprication, FAWM
As we stumble over the broken sidewalk, we often notice that the shadows are much deeper than they first appeared.
See You In The Shadows…
