Don't Refrain

about

It would seem I have some leftover angst from Animated Degradation (fawm.org/songs/104801/). Also, this is probably the most work I've put into a song so far this FAWM & it still feels like it's a demo. There's spots that can be improved, for sure.

This one started out way different that it ended up. I was playing around on my strat with some heavy chordal figures and a fast rhythm. I quickly decided it needed words and started singing random stuff. I muddled like this for a while, finally writing down the introduction after slowing down my playing. Then I spent the next hour writing the lyrics & the rest of the song.

Then I recorded the rhythm guitar & vox using my "Live" Buzz setup. I then did a quick edit of the WAV file in Audacity & dropped it back into Buzz (c/o the Continuous Wave Reader III Buzz Machine) & recorded a lead guitar part. Rinse, repeat for Bass (my strat patched through FSM's TunaMan to detune it down a whole octave) & backing vox. Spent most of the afternoon recording this. Then I did a mix in Audacity of all these tracks, doubling up a couple of them to give them some meat. Et voilà… a song put together with way more effort than I usually aspire to.

This one still has a dark side & some angst. But it's a lot more hopeful than Animated Degradation. I had a chat with one of my fiction collaborators last night (February 13th) & I think it helped me start to get over this angsty bump. Maybe this song is another step on that path?

See You In The Shadows…

lyrics

Don't Refrain
===========

For twenty nine years, it's been so long
Since I felt the rain
Or heard a song
For twenty nine years, maybe more
I've been in pain
Staring at the door

And where will I go now
Out into this dark world
My friend?
And where can I go now
That I'm free, free to be anyone
In the end?

Don't stop to patronize
Don't stop the tears in my eyes
Don't stop all the pain
Don't remain, don't refrain
Don't stop to patronize
Don't stop the tears in my eyes
Don't stop all the pain
Don't refrain, don't remain

The road to hell is paved
With good intentions
But we walk this road
Of our own free will
Our choices are
Our only constraints
A prison of our
Own making
So I walk the road
Encumbered by my freedom
Hoping to choose
The shortest destined path

Don't stop to patronize
Don't stop the tears in my eyes
Don't stop all the pain
Don't remain, don't refrain
Don't stop to patronize
Don't stop the tears in my eyes
Don't stop all the pain
Don't refrain, don't remain

Don't stop to patronize
Don't stop the tears in my eyes
Don't stop all the pain
Don't remain, don't refrain
Don't stop to patronize
Don't stop the tears in my eyes
Don't stop all the pain
Don't refrain, don't remain

I walk through the night
I still see the light
