Before The Rain explores the theme of loss. Whether it is existential, emotional or spiritual, loss is something we all have to deal with. Regret is often a by-product of this loss, though those who deal best with loss are those who live with no regrets. There is regret throughout this song as the protagonist tries to deal with the loss they have endured. This is indeed the first step on the path to healing from the loss in one's life.
