about

From the original 50/90 Liner Notes:

"I have to admit that I have been listening to a lot of Hovercraft recently (might be why I'm hearing some of their stylings in @dzd's recent songs… but i'll let Jung figure that one out). I've had their first CD Akathisia spinning in my car stereo for over a week now & I listen to it pretty much any time I've had to go out. It's also been a while since I've done a trippy space rock track like this & my Muse was really getting excited by the prospect of doing this. So yeah, I sort of just gave in, pressed record in Jeskola Buzz & started "playing".

The song features a bunch of different techniques all wrapped into one sonic Experiænce. First off, the guitar is awash in delay & reverb - because no self-respecting Space Rock tune is without either of those effects. Second, I completely forwent any sense of using a regular plectrum in any shape or manner. The first guitar tones you hear were created by rubbing the perforated edge of a plastic knife across the strings just above the neck pickup. A plastic fork also makes an appearance as well as a plastic baby spoon (thanks to @Joanne Gabriel for introducing me to the wonders of Spoon Guitar). My slide also plays a major role, creating a bevy of distorted chaos & high pitched deep space signals, so many you could take a bite out of them at one point. Also, a rather large, double-lengthed, white bread tag provided some jarring attacks on a few notes - thanks to its little barbs along its sides. HG Fortune's wonderful Percumat 2 keeps the beat, grounding everything into a coherent whole (I hope), while the Mobius VST provided the opportunity to loop some fun noises & Elogoxa's Elottronix XL VST - a Fripperfrontics emmulator that's a great free VST effect you should have in your arsenal!) creates space & almost endless fading loops near the end of this epic inter-dimensional journey.

Well, that was just fun. I gotta do more stuff like this.

Gear: Fender Deluxe Stratocaster -> DigiTech Grunge Pedal -> Behringer UMC404HD Audio Interface -> Candle's "Live" Jeskola Buzz Setup all controlled by the Behringer FCB1010 MIDI Foot Controller.

Plectrum ('cos they needed a seperate list) - in order of first appearance (IIRC): Beige Plastic Knife; Red Plastic Baby Spoon; Glass Slide; Fingers; White Double-Length Bread Tag marked "004"; Beige Plastic Fork"

This was but the start of this epic Space Rock journey…
