about

A sonic journey through mind and space you will not forget! The Experience that is Candle returns with the new album, Chromatics. Originally recorded as part of the 2010 February Album Writing Month challenge, the fourteen songs of Chromatics were written & recorded in twenty eight days. “This is something else! So easy to fall between the layers. There is the perception of both denseness and space as I listen.” - Debs, F.A.W.M. Comment; www.fawm.org

Candle has been the solo project of Darby Spicer since 1996, when he first started recording experimental and ambient rock music using his guitar and a few keyboards. Since that time, Darby has continued to experiment with sounds as well as playing techniques in order to create sonic vistas that allow the listener to truly experience the music. Based in Keewatin, Ontario, Canada - Candle has performed in coffee houses, bars, Canada Day celebrations and on television. The unique style and methodology of the music has drawn curious listeners from all over the world and turned them into fans.

Chromatics is a concept album built around the idea of the musical chromatic scale. Each song on the album is written in a different key with the order progressing along the length of the chromatic scale itself. Even the song titles reflect this concept as each one uses the note names of the scale for their own nomenclature. The majority of the songs were recorded “live to tape” in one take without the use of overdubs added in post production It is this “live to tape” method that Darby has used as his primary mode of recording since 2005.

Live performances of Chromatics material, as well as older Candle songs are planned for the remainder of 2010. The song Delicate Shame will also be featured on the upcoming Songs For Our Scene compilation set to be released in the later half of 2010.
